Obituary for Pastor Doug Shada

Obituary for Pastor Doug G. Shada as posted at

Pastor Doug Shada entered the presence of Jesus Sunday, November 5, 2017 after a 4-month battle with cancer.

Doug, 69, was born to Eli & Madeline (Yanney) Shada on August 18, 1948 and grew up in Ansley, NE, learning the values of hard work and integrity at Shada Market, the family business.

Doug graduated from Ansley High School in 1966 and then attended Kearney State College, participating in football and track. He married Farrol (McCulley) Shada in 1969 and was a teacher at Anselmo Merna Public Schools.

After moving to Lincoln in 1974, Doug began working at the Nebraska Department of Corrections as a counselor, then head counselor and then became an administrator at Lincoln Correctional Center. While at the prison, he helped establish the Prison Fellowship Ministry in Nebraska. In the early 1990’s he was asked to assist as a track coach at Lincoln Southeast High School which became a ministry to several student athletes.

For 20 years, Doug served on the pastoral staff of Lincoln Berean Church (1980-2000). He chaired the Elder Board, led various ministries, and began mentoring men through a personal approach of love and accountability grounded in the Bible. One of his great joys was leading a spiritual study for doctors in the Lincoln area.

In 2001, Doug and Farrol moved to Kearney, NE where they started two different churches and Doug continued reaching out to the community. Through countless breakfasts, lunches, counseling sessions, marriages, funerals, and other meetings, Doug touched people of all ages and backgrounds with God’s truth and love. He was honored as Pastor of the Year by the Nebraska Family Council in 2002.

A gifted leader, Doug served on many boards, including the International Center for Biblical Counseling in Sioux City, Iowa, Grace University, and Maranatha Bible Camp, where he led junior and senior high camp for 30 years, and a couples retreat for 24 years. He served on boards of several businesses in Lincoln, helping them develop leadership strategies.

From 1993-2011, Doug served as President of the Berean Fellowship of Churches, where his passion for international ministry grew into leadership within Possibilities Africa and Love Counts Now.

Doug was a passionate communicator of biblical truth, speaking to many civic groups, high school groups, college classes and business seminars. His daily Facebook postings were read and shared by thousands across the world. He enjoyed a round of golf, a fishing trip, and hunting deer or pheasants.

Family was always Doug’s first ministry, which showed in the way he served his wife, children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and the way he cared for his aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Preceded in death by his parents, Doug is survived by his wife, Farrol, of Kearney; son, Matt (Catherine) Shada of Omaha; daughter, Jodie (Gregg) Madsen of Omaha; brother, Jim (Linda) Shada of Bellevue, sister Mary Weich of Lincoln, and brother Randy (Diane) Shada of Wahoo; six grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and their families, as well as countless who called Doug their friend, pastor, counselor, and mentor.

Services will be at 10 a.m on Friday, Nov. 10 at the Younes Convention Center in Kearney, with graveside service at Ansley Cemetery at 3 p.m. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral Home in Kearney. Memorials are suggested to Possibilities Africa (possibilitiesafrica.org) or to Elevate, starting businesses internationally to transform lives eternally (elevate-people.com).

Pastor Doug in Heaven: “Because of Christ, no matter what, we win!”

The following message was sent via email and posted on the Living Faith Fellowship Facebook page on Sunday, November 5th:

“Very early this morning, November 5, Doug met Jesus face to face. The hole in my heart is already huge. Our children were with me at his side since Friday. We have been shown so much compassion and support during our encounter with cancer and we can’t begin to express our gratefulness. As you might imagine, we have been up all night so we would request privacy for at least a day to try and rest to be prepared for a week of celebrating Doug’s life. One of the “Dougisms” is “Because of Christ, no matter what, we win!” He has finished strong in the race where God placed him and he has won.
-Farrol Shada

Funeral arrangements will be posted once they have been announced.

Pot Luck, Sunday, September 24, 2017

This Sunday (September 24), immediately following the morning service there will be a potluck dinner. Please bring food to share.

Also this Sunday, a sermon series will begin on the Gospel of John. Retired Pastor Mark Carlton from Colby, KS will introduce the book this week and teach us from the first verses of John the following Sunday. Pastor Mark was part of the same family of churches we were for many years and Doug and I have always had great respect for his ability to search out and communicate truth. He is a master at debate and has coached several debate teams. His wife, Pam, will accompany him. They have two grown children and also enjoy the role of grandparenting.
